El Salvador is divided into administrative divisions known as departments. There are 14 departments in total, each with its own distinct characteristics, geography, and culture. These departments are Ahuachapán, Cabañas, Chalatenango, Cuscatlán, La Libertad, La Paz, La Unión, Morazán, San Miguel, San Salvador, San Vicente, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, and Usulután. Each department is further divided into municipalities, which are the second-level administrative divisions. The departments encompass a diverse range of landscapes, from coastal regions to mountainous areas, and each contributes to the country's cultural, economic, and social fabric in unique ways.
